The Brainard Volunteer Fire Department has 28 members of whom 9 are trained as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and one trained first responder. Equipment includes a 1994 International 1,000 gallon per minute pumper and a new 3,000-gallon tanker. Rescue services equipment includes a 2000 Road Rescue Type III Ultra Medic ambulance and a Jaws of Life purchased in 2001. Recently, a new 2500 gallon pumper truck with a CAFS phone system was purchased to serve the community. The volunteer fire department has participated in a Life Net helicopter class and additional EMT training classes. Brainard participates in a mutual aid agreement with both Butler and Saunders Counties. The city is equipped with a 911 emergency system.
